House Of The Dragon: Paddy Considine On Viserys’ Heartbreaking Last Day (Image Credit: HBO)
The actor talks about the future of his character, his worst error, and the "complete mayhem and crazy" that will occur.
The first moments of House of the Dragon made it clear to spectators that King Viserys' days were numbered. Week after week, the king withered away from a leprosy infection, losing bodily parts and developing hideous sores, while unhappiness in his court grew over his choice of heir (his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen). As he frantically attempted to persuade his quarrelling family to put aside their differences and avert a civil war in episode eight, Viserys transformed into a Gothic spectral figure of death, with half of his face hidden by bandages or a gilded mask.
Actor Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) gave a sad performance as a man who tried his absolute hardest to avert a Targaryen apocalypse but failed miserably. Additionally, it appears that this portrayal may spark Emmy discussion.
Considine spoke with The Hollywood Reporter via Zoom last spring for a previously unreleased interview regarding the overall fate of his character.
Considine remarked, "I believe it's extremely gallant and honorable how he travels. He is in excruciating pain due to a condition. He essentially develops a creeping leprosy, and his bones begin to disintegrate. His lungs begin to malfunction. He's just passing away horribly slowly.
He appears aged by the time it is over. He isn't! He is an adult male. Only a certain number of years separate him from his brother Daemon. But it has made him older. Even if he doesn't utilize power for his own benefit, it serves as a metaphor for what it can do to people. He is accountable; he doesn't get wasted on the electricity. However, the physical demands of being a king have an impact on health. Therefore, it was amusing to watch him decline. He merely wants to act morally. Before leaving, he gets to say a few words, which I appreciated.
When asked what Viserys' worst error was, Considine responded that his character ought to have turned down the chance to become king in the first place.
He claimed that being king was the only error he had done. He ought to have responded, "No, give it to Rhaenys. I do not desire it. I'm going to fly some dragons and enjoy myself with the ladies in shady areas of the city.
After giving it some thought, Considine had another regret, which was made clear at the dinner scene when Alicent's kids were yelling at Rhaenyra's.
He claims that "I believe he forgot to be a decent parent to his second family." "I believe he did not make any effort to help the kids. They weren't fond of him. One day when I was working on set, one of the actors portraying one of my sons said, "You hate us." I then asked, "What?" Why do you say that? That I despise you personally, much like Paddy [the actor] despises you? He responded, "No, Viserys despises us because you despise your children," Wow, that's wonderful, I thought. That was such a meaningful thing for him to say.
The actor said, "Viserys doesn't dislike his children. "He simply does not love them in the same way that he loves Rhaenyra. because King Viserys's wife, Aemma, is Rhaenyra's mother. He feels deeply responsible for pressuring her to have a kid so frequently because he was so adamant about wanting a male successor and there were numerous failed pregnancies. His biggest regret is that. There is some shame there, which is one of the reasons he decided to name Rhaenyra as his heir.
The actor continues, saying that since the death of the monarch is a significant turning point in the story, he is eager to see what happens next as a viewer.
What follows is complete mayhem, he declared. It seems as though everything Viserys tried hard to stop has happened. It is utter chaos, ruin, and craziness.
Considine then shocked everyone by bringing out a harmonica and playing a few notes on it. He said, "I'm rehearsing some chords since I have a gig on Thursday. Considine does have a band called Riding the Low, which has been operating since 2009 and has put out two albums, in addition to playing the role of a doomed king.
THR also spoke with filmmaker Geeta Patel about Considine's prolonged stroll in the throne room, his farewell dinner, Alicent's internal struggle, and what happened to Dyana.
