The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious Episode 11 Read More About It: The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious Hepburn also known as My Recently Hired Maid is Suspicious, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Wakame Konbu.
Well, that conclusion totally sneaked up on us, didn't it? The ending of The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious not only lacks any real build-up, but it also answers a lot of questions while going back on some of the things I thought it was implying earlier.
It also best captures the general bewilderment that the series has left me with, even though I do enjoy some of the points the program concludes on. When Mysterious Maid tackles themes of discovered family and overcoming loneliness, it can be immensely heartwarming and poignant. However, when it makes romantic overtures between our two characters, it can be difficult to watch and plain annoying.
Let's start with that final statement since it provides an unceremonious and haphazard answer to one of the most pressing problems that I and many other viewers of this show had. As early as the first episode, there were hints about the relationship that existed between Lilith and Yuuri when they were younger. We were aware that Lilith had a purpose for coming, and that she was hiding behind a mask of mystery, which further piqued our curiosity about her and that of Yuuri.
The past ten episodes have repeatedly reinforced the fact that there is a deeper reason for all this secrecy because she was quite guarded about both that information and where she had previously worked. After all, all the effort that went into making Lilith's history appear "secret" would seem incredibly unnecessary and downright unpleasant if she simply chose to work for Yuuri for a commonplace reason and if her previous employer had no issue at all with her moving employment.
*Sigh* It turns out that Lilith knows Yuuri and his family because Lilith also lost her parents when she was a young child and was raised by a number of different homes before Yuuri's family temporarily took care of her. I truly don't know why this was ever a mystery. I also don't get why she still can't just explain everything to Yuuri in the same way that she did at the beginning of this episode with her former master. Lilith expresses her hope at Yuuri's continued interest in her at the very end of the episode, as I sit here yelling at my computer screen, "WHY DON'T YOU JUST TALK TO HIM?"
It's possible that she has more secrets about her history that she would prefer to remain concealed. In contrast, not only was her former master very cool and understanding with why she was there, but he is also really polite to Yuuri when he meets him. I had assumed that she could have some information about her former master and that is why she was so keen about keeping it a secret. I feel hurt for having any interest in the tale at all after seeing this episode.
The show then takes the extremely unusual choice to end with this question of whether Yuuri and Lilith will ever get together. Even though they go on dates and everything we have seen about their relationship strongly suggests that their love is more romantic than familial, the author opted to inject the possibility that perhaps that isn't the kind of love either of them are experiencing at the last minute.
If this had been brought up sooner rather than at the very end after these two have said everything they have to say, I might have been able to believe it. I'm not really sure what the purpose is supposed to be because it simply seems like incredibly strange timing.
And it's doubly annoying because, in my opinion, keeping everything nebulous and mysterious right up to the very end would have made the program more interesting. I had already decided that Yuuri is much too young to really comprehend or distinguish between those sorts of love, especially given that he is going through a very delicate stage in life where it is possible that he will simply cling to anyone to fill the hole of his loneliness.
What part Lilith plays in his life—whether as a lover, a big sister, or a foster mother—might have made for some pretty interesting conversation. In fact, I believe that if there had been a little more exploration or introspection into the origins of those feelings, I could have found their romance to be more convincing.
The Maid I Recently Hired Is Mysterious showed a lot of promise and had many strong, well-written moments. It had engaging characters and demonstrated that it is possible to be serious, passionate, and even humorous at different times without causing whiplash. Though it feels like it's trying to shout numerous messages at once, some messages can only be made obvious by ignoring some of the others, so right up until the very end, I'm not sure what it meant to do with these characters and themes.
This is my greatest complaint. Because the foundation is so flimsy and uneven, I'm not sure how you could address some of the issues raised in this first season, even if a second one were to air. I'm just incredibly confused—not angry or dissatisfied.
